Prepare for the hills, distance and fatigue of the 2027 Cowtown Marathon or Half
The 2027 Cowtown full marathon and half marathon are scheduled for Sunday, February 28 at 7:00 a.m. from Will Rogers Memorial Center. The route moves through distinct parts of Fort Worth, including the Stockyards, downtown and the Colonial area. Your training should prepare for repeated changes in grade, pace and fatigue, not only a weekly mileage total.

A late-February race changes the shape of the training year
Peak long runs land in cooler North Texas months, but the course still asks for more than flat mileage. The body has to tolerate repeated rises, descents and pace changes without losing control late.
The official race pages list the half marathon at 13.1 miles and the full marathon at 26.2 miles, both starting at Will Rogers Memorial Center. The 2027 race-weekend listing confirms Sunday, February 28 for the half, full and ultra events.
The route description runs through several distinct parts of Fort Worth. That creates turns, grade changes and a long sequence of small mechanical decisions. A runner can be fit enough for the distance and still be underprepared for the repeated braking and climbing the course asks for.
The half and full share the morning, not the same demand
Both races begin at the same venue and time. The distance decides how long the legs must keep absorbing turns, slopes and repeated ground contact after the early miles have worn off.
Miles through Fort Worth from Will Rogers and back.
Miles, with the later course exposing endurance gaps.
A.M. for the official Sunday half and full schedule.
The course does not care whether the missing piece came from a sore knee, a weak calf, cautious downhill mechanics or a long-run plan that stayed too flat. The evaluation should identify which demand is likely to fail first and build it before race day.
The hill-training decision
“A hill plan is not only climbing. It is controlling the descent and keeping form after repeated changes in grade.”What rolling-course preparation should include
Train the way the route asks you to
Climbing increases the work at the calf, knee and hip. Descending asks the quadriceps and other tissues to absorb force while the body may be moving faster. Repeated rollers can expose a problem that never appears on a flat treadmill or one short hill repeat.
That does not mean every run should be hilly. It means the week should have enough specific exposure to reveal how your body handles the course demand, followed by enough recovery and strength work to adapt to it.
Add the course demand without losing the base
A rolling-course block works best when hills are layered onto stable easy mileage rather than used as a replacement for it.
- 01 Establish repeatable easy mileage on familiar terrain
- 02 Add short controlled rises without chasing pace
- 03 Practice smooth descents and quiet braking
- 04 Extend a rolling long run while keeping fueling familiar
- 05 Rehearse race effort after several changes in grade
- 06 Taper the volume without adding new terrain or equipment
Use hills as a dose, not a test of toughness. The right session leaves enough control for the next important run instead of stealing the rest of the week.
Fort Worth training can be examined in the setting that matters
A route can show the problem under repeated grade changes. A gym can expose the force or control gap. Home and online visits can keep the plan moving between longer outdoor sessions.
An agreed Fort Worth route
Compare flat running, rolling terrain, turns, descents and the point where symptoms or form begin to change.
Your home
Use a treadmill, nearby neighborhood route or simple strength setup without adding another drive to the training week.
Your gym
Build calf, quadriceps, hip and trunk capacity for climbing, descending and late-race control.
Online or at work
Review the training week and progression when the decision can be made without a full in-person recheck.
Questions before the 2027 Cowtown Half or Full
Race facts, hills, interrupted training and the decisions that protect the block.
When are the 2027 Cowtown Half and Full Marathon?
The official race listing identifies Sunday, February 28, 2027 at 7:00 a.m. for the half marathon and full marathon at Will Rogers Memorial Center. Confirm details with the organizer before race day.
Should every long run be hilly?
No. Hills are one training variable. A useful plan keeps enough easy, familiar running to build total durability, then adds specific rolling-course exposure at a dose the body can absorb.
Why do downhills bother my knees more than climbs?
Descending requires the leg to absorb and control force while speed may increase. A runner can have enough fitness to climb and still lack the quadriceps capacity, control or confidence to manage repeated descents comfortably.
What if my calf or Achilles only hurts on hills?
That pattern is useful. It suggests the grade and force demand may be exposing a capacity gap. The evaluation still needs to screen the location, tenderness, strength, range, running pattern and response after the session before deciding how much hill work stays.
Can I make up missed hill sessions late in the block?
Do not stack them simply to complete the plan. Late training should protect the adaptations already built. Choose the remaining sessions with the highest value and enough recovery to reach the start line healthy.
Can we meet on part of my normal Fort Worth route?
Yes, when an agreed outdoor setting is practical and appropriate. We can also start at your home, gym or office, or use an online visit when the plan can be reviewed remotely.
Do I need a referral to schedule?
You do not need a referral to schedule an evaluation in Texas. Texas permits eligible physical therapists to begin treatment without a referral for up to 30 consecutive days. We will tell you before continued care requires one, and insurance or surgical requirements may be different.
How does payment work?
Argan is a private-pay practice. Payment is due at the visit. HSA and FSA cards are accepted, and we can provide a superbill for possible out-of-network reimbursement.
Bring the hill, distance or late-run problem that keeps repeating
Tell us the race distance, current mileage, terrain you normally use and the first point where the run changes. We will connect the exam to the exact demand, then build the remaining block around what your body can absorb before February 28.
